We must take immediate action to keep Santa Cruz County beaches safe for everyone. Last year's historic budget cuts have resulted in the loss of the State Parks Seasonal Lifeguard program. Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks (Friends) has stepped up and made the commitment to raise the money to save the seasonal lifeguards.
Our lifeguards not only protect swimmers, surfers and kayakers out in the water; they are often the first responders to medical emergencies, both small and large; and teach our local youth how to be safe, while enjoying and protecting our ocean.
Last year 3 million people enjoyed our local beaches. Our state lifeguards:
- Rescued 151 people
- Provided 430 people with direct medical attention
- Educated 6,000 individuals, including 1,500 Jr. Lifeguards
- Made 96,000 preventive safety contacts that saved lives & prevented injuries
