I am writing to voice my strong opposition to the proposed budget cuts which would result in the removal of seasonal lifeguards from 16 State Beaches.  Santa Cruz County alone would lose all of its seasonal lifeguards, risking the safety of nearly two million visiting and local beachgoers each year.
 
Over 50% of the coastline in Santa Cruz County is encompassed by a State Park. Each year local State Park Lifeguards:
  . Make 125 - 300 lifesaving rescues
  . Make 70,000 - 80,000 public safety interventions
  . Respond to over 250 emergency medical situations
  . Make numerous boat rescues, preventing over $100,000 in loss of property.
  . Teach 600 Junior Lifeguards
 
It is unconscionable to allow the state beaches in Santa Cruz County and throughout the state of California to go through the popular summer seasons without adequate lifeguard staffing. This is a dangerous proposal that threatens the health and safety of Californians.
 
Furthermore, I believe that the Governor`s proposal to close 48 California State Parks has a very real and devastating impact on families, schoolchildren and others who visit and enjoy our treasured State Parks.  The proposed closures and cuts break a promise to the people of California that these parks will be available and accessible to the public.  That promise must not be broken!
