Commemorate the Advocate Tree

July 29, 2017 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

Free

The Advocates for the Forest of Nisene Marks and Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks will host a commemorative gathering for Nisene Marks State Park’s fallen giant, the Advocate Tree, on Saturday, July 29. The event also will mark the 25th anniversary of The Advocates for the Forest of Nisene Marks with a celebratory BBQ.

After a thousand years or more, the Advocate Tree fell on Jan. 9, 2017. A park visitor heard a tremendous crash and found the fallen giant on the ground. That beautiful old-growth tree was more than 45 feet in circumference and over 250 feet tall, making it one of the tallest redwoods in the park.

The commemoration will be at 11 a.m. at the Pourroy Picnic area. Immediately following, the Advocates will celebrate the 25th year of the organization with a free BBQ at the Emmett Reed Picnic area. The Advocates, founded in 1992, help take care of the park through monthly trail work days, and raising money and volunteers to support projects in The Forest of Nisene Marks.

The park is on Aptos Creek Road, off Soquel Drive, in Aptos. The events are free; parking at the park is $10 and supports the park.
